Storm Damage Insurance Claims: What You Need to Know

11/14/2023 (Permalink)

Team members performing a pack out service. Our team of experts is ready to assist you in getting your property back to its pre-storm condition.

When a storm wreaks havoc on your home or business, the last thing you want is to be overwhelmed by the complexities of an insurance claim. Understanding the process and knowing what to do can make a significant difference in how smoothly and successfully your storm damage claim is resolved. In this blog, we will walk you through the key aspects of storm damage insurance claims, providing you with valuable insights and tips to navigate the process effectively.

1. Document the Damage

The first step in any storm damage insurance claim is to thoroughly document the damage. This documentation is crucial for substantiating your claim. Here's what you need to do:

  • Take Clear Photos and Videos: Capture the extent of the damage from multiple angles, ensuring that you cover all affected areas. These visual records will serve as essential evidence during the claims process.

  • Create an Inventory: List all damaged items, including their value, purchase date, and any relevant receipts. This will help in assessing the extent of your loss.

2. Contact Your Insurance Company

Notify your insurance company as soon as possible after the storm. Be prepared to provide them with the following information:

  • Policy Information: Have your policy number and details ready.

  • Claim Details: Explain the type and extent of damage and the date it occurred.

  • Contact Information: Ensure your contact information is up to date so that the insurer can reach you promptly.

3. Understand Your Policy

It's crucial to understand the specifics of your insurance policy. Not all policies cover the same types of storm damage. Here are some things to consider:

  • Coverage Limits: Know the limits and deductibles on your policy.

  • Exclusions: Understand what your policy does not cover.

  • Additional Coverages: Some policies offer optional endorsements for specific perils, such as flood or sewer backup coverage.

4. Mitigate Further Damage

Insurance companies may require you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage to your property. Failure to do so might affect your claim. Be sure to:

  • Cover Exposed Areas: Use tarps or boards to cover openings in your home or roof to prevent more damage from rain or debris.

  • Keep Records: Document any expenses related to temporary repairs.

5. Work with the Adjuster

An insurance adjuster will assess the damage, so be prepared for their visit. Here's what you can do:

  • Provide Evidence: Show the adjuster your photos, videos, and documentation.

  • Be Present: Be available to answer questions and provide access to all damaged areas.

  • Get a Detailed Report: Ensure that the adjuster provides a detailed report of the damage and their assessment.

6. Keep Records

Throughout the claims process, keep a record of all communications with your insurance company. This includes emails, letters, and phone call details. Having a paper trail can be beneficial if any disputes arise.

7. Seek Professional Assistance

If the process becomes complex or disputes arise, consider seeking legal or professional help. Public adjusters or attorneys can assist you in negotiations and ensure that your rights are protected.

Navigating a storm damage insurance claim can be challenging, but with the right knowledge and preparedness, you can ensure a smoother process. Document the damage, understand your policy, and maintain open communication with your insurance company and adjuster. Should you need assistance along the way, don't hesitate to seek professional help. Remember, we're here to help you during this stressful time.

HEAVY RAINS

Heavy rains could fill rivers and streams, bringing flooding to the area. If your home in Woodland Hills is threatened with the possibility of flooding, here are some things you should do:

-Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice. When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there.

-Stay away from floodwaters.

-If you come upon a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.

-Keep children out of the water.

-Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood danger.

Although in Los Angeles, California we don't see as much rain as other parts of the U.S, it is when we least expect it that emergency situations occur.

Tree branch fallen on a roof Wind damage? Call SERVPRO of Woodland Hills to clean it up! 818-882-4556

Even mild windstorms can cause a lot of destruction but fortunately, there are steps you can take to lower your risk of having wind damage to your home or business.

  1. Remove trees or hanging branches in close proximity to your structure. Storms easily knock down trees, but that doesn’t mean you need to be at risk. If you have trees next to your house or office, consider having them trimmed if they are top-heavy or removed if they are sick, dying, or completely dead.
  2. Move furniture in your yard to a safe place. Nearly any unsecured object—including furniture on your property can be hazardous and damaging in a windstorm. Either fasten loose objects or have them temporarily relocated until the storm passes.
  3. Haul debris. If you have any extra items laying around it is a good idea to take the time to have loose items removed for your safety.
  4. Watch the weather! Local weather forecasts predict storms pretty accurately. Always be prepared!

There are several ways you can mitigate your risk of having wind damage, But there’s no sure way to prevent it completely. If you have damage due to high wind storms, SERVPRO of Woodland Hills is always here to clean up and restore your property. 818-882-4556

Many of our homes and businesses lose power in Los Angeles County due to rolling blackouts and heatwaves. It is very important that you make smart decisions to protect your property and your family during the heat storms.

Candles can make a power-outage turn into a fire damage disaster in your Woodland Hills, CA home very quickly. If your power is out, it is much safer to use flashlights or another battery-powered light fixture. If candles must be used, ensure the candle is never left unattended and place it in a fireproof lantern or holder.

Power outages from heatwaves, wildfires, and rolling blackouts can also create dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning from indoor grills or generators. These items when used in a confined indoor area can be fatal. Carbon monoxide leaks cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted, therefore many do not realize they are being poisoned by it until it is too late.  It is also a good idea to unplug appliances and keep your property well ventilated.

In the unfortunate event, you have experienced wildfire, smoke, or soot damage or any other disaster at your property due to the California storm season, our highly trained customer services representatives and IICRC certified technicians are here to help; please call SERVPRO of Woodland Hills 818-882-4556.

Preparing for a flood. If your home or business has recently suffered from storm or flood damage, then contact SERVPRO of Woodland Hills 818-882-4556.

Each year homeowners face the possibility of flooding, whether it’s from a heavy rain storm or a burst piping. Although you can’t completely stop a flood, you can minimize the impact that water has on your property. Below are a few steps you can do to help keep water from invading or destroying your property.

Have a Plan

The best thing you can do if you think you live in a flood zone is to have a plan of action in advance. Here is a list of things to consider:

  • Store all important documents in a watertight secure container.
  • Have a separate lockbox for jewelry & any other valuables.
  • Contact your marketing representative at SERVPRO of Woodland Hills in advance and set up an Emergency Ready Plan for protecting your home & getting a quick service response after a flood.

Even if some water manages to get, sandbags & flood barriers can reduce the water damage & can save you thousands of dollars in repairs.

Rethink Your Home’s Construction

If you are building a new home or renovating your current one, then invest in components that are waterproof or create a tighter seal around the structure. Some of these include:

  • Concrete flooring instead of wooden floorboards
  • One-way valves in your plumbing to prevent water backup in the plumbing system
  • Waterproof all of your electrical outlets
  • Cement render & lime plaster
  • Water resistant window & door frames
  • Flood skirts around brick homes

Wind Storm Tips From SERVPRO of Woodland Hills

fallen tree Storm damage restoration 24/7/365. 818-882-4556

During storm season in Woodland Hills, CA, home and business owners are most likely to be concerned with rain that might cause roof leaks and flooding. Winds can also cause damage to your buildings. Wind damage is commonly debris or large items that are blown against a structure, on a rooftop or through windows during a storm.

Here are some tips for preventing problems that are caused by high winds.

Prune Your Trees

The trees on your property should be regularly trimmed to avoid damage. These problems can arise when trees are not pruned properly:

  • Decay or disease
  • Leaning
  • Hanging branches over a structure
  • Sharp angles in tree forks
  • Crowded or crossed branches

Proper maintenance keeps trees healthy so that they are less likely to break and cause problems during a storm.

Limit Debris

Outdoor property, looking at it for storm preparation.

  • Loose shingles can become missing shingles
  • Gravel from the driveway can break windows
  • Decorations
  • trash cans
  • signs
  • potted plants

can be broken or hurled through windows.

Overall, preparing for high winds that accompany storms is a matter of limiting the objects the wind can pick up and fling at your building.

This kind of damage is devastating and much of your property, business, or home, can be ruined. Regardless of the extent of damage, speed, or duration of its occurrence, the storm can result in ownership and possession loss.

Storms, heavy rains, mudslides, and severe climate can leave massive losses to a community like Los Angeles County. This is why proper damage restoration should be a must. If you wish to live a stress-free life despite an unfortunate event like flooding, you need to hire the best restoration company SERVPRO. Professional restoration companies are highly skilled and trained, and know the entire process to get your home back.  You can trust that 23 years of experience will get you back on track in no time.

2 Ways Water Can Get in During a Storm

Well equipped to handle any size disaster.

SERVPRO of Woodland Hills Storm Damage Tips

Did you know that there are two types of water damage?

Yes, there are 2 ways water can get into your home or business. From the top and from the bottom. If it infiltrates the property from the roof it is usually from faulty shingles or gutters that were not cleaned.  Please clean your gutters!  It is definitely an inconvenience but, fortunately, it is usually covered by your insurance policy.

If it enters from the base of the property it is called groundwater infiltration and this type of water damage is most likely not going to be covered.  But the damage needs to be cleaned up as soon as possible. Remove the standing water by using a wet/dry vacuum, mopping it up, or using a sump pump. If you have fans, bring them in to move the air around and dry out the space. Hint: If there is any evidence of mold, do not use the fans since this will spread the spores. If the water level can be measured in inches you need to call in a professional.

The water remediation professionals at SERVPRO of Woodland Hills have the knowledge, experience, and equipment to make it, “Like it never even happened.

Are You Ready for a Storm?

Whole house flooding after a storm

Ways to prepare before the storm arrives:

  • Look around. Lawn furniture, toys, tables, and chairs should be brought inside or stored away. Secure your grill.
  • Remove any solar-powered ground lights. Ground lights that are hard-wired can be left in the ground.
  • Wrap burlap around ornamental trees or fragile bushes. You can also stake and string trees and bushes.
  • Take in any window air conditioners.

After a storm damage:

  •  Remember, electricity and water are a deadly combination. If you have to walk through water to turn off the circuit breaker, consider calling your power company to shut off the power.
  • If you are unsure of the best and safest way to shut off the power, call your local fire department.
  • To mitigate any further damage to your valuables, raise any items up off of the floor and out of the water.
  • If the roof has incurred any damage, immediately call SERVPRO to cover it with a tarp.
  • If a window has been broken, immediately call SERVPRO to board it up.
  • Check on neighbors—especially the elderly—to make sure they are safe.

You made a disaster kit for yourself and family, so make one for your pet. This includes medical records and medication, food and water with can openers, leashes, and carriers.

Tips:

  • Keep pets inside during a storm. Animals can become confused and run away from home during a disaster.
  • Arrange a safe haven for you and your pets during evacuation. Do not leave pets behind.
  • Store an emergency kit—with items such as pet food, bottled water, medical records, a blanket, a flashlight and leashes—as close to an exit as possible.
  • Make sure all pets wear collars and tags.
  • Have your pet microchipped in case of a lost collar.
  • Place a rescue alert sticker to your front home to let rescuers know that there are pets inside.
  • Choose a caregiver to take care of your pet in the event you are unable to.
